KING CITY — Today, Stephen Lecce, MPP for King—Vaughan, announced that the Government of Ontario is investing over $1 million into the Township of King through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) to help renew and rehabilitate local infrastructure. MPP Lecce continues to deliver critical investments that improve the quality of life of families, seniors and farmers by improving broadband, paving roads, protecting drinking water and enhancing the accessibility of local buildings. The Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund is part of the government’s $190 billion capital plan to build and expand more homes, highways, hospitals, transit and high-speed internet across the province.
This is the 7th-consecutive time MPP Lecce delivered funding to support the community of King, appreciating the unique challenges facing vast rural communities with relatively low populations.
“I remain doubly motivated to deliver for our families and seniors, that is why I have secured funding to build the state-of-the-art King Township-Wide Rec Centre, a new medical school, two new long-term care homes and high-speed internet expansion across our community.” said Stephen Lecce, MPP for King--Vaughan. “I will always show up for King – a community that was ignored by the former government – because families here deserve the investment and prioritization. I am proud to again deliver over one million in funding to King to help improve local roads so that we reduce congestion and improve safety across the community."
"I am proud to once again deliver this significant investment in King knowing full well that it will secure the modern infrastructure our rural community needs.”
This investment is yet another testament to MPP Lecce’s steadfast commitment to delivering results for King–Vaughan. Concrete investments that MPP Lecce delivered include the Schomberg Main Street Revitalization Strategy, repairs and upgrades to the municipal water system in King, and a new long-term care home at Mary Lake in King City. Moreover, in 2022, MPP Lecce announced improved internet and broadband connectivity in King through a $48 million investment in York Region to bring high-speed internet to over 3,800 households in underserved communities such as Kettleby, Pottageville, Laskay, Lloydtown, and Schomberg. Earlier this year, MPP Lecce announced the first medical school in Canada with a focused mandate of training family physicians at the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital in partnership with York University to deliver better, more integrated healthcare, closer to home. This local medical school will directly serve King, Vaughan and the broader Region of York.
MPP Lecce also delivered the single largest provincial investment in King history with the $17.6 million provincial investment to help construct the Township-Wide Recreation Centre, set to open in early 2025, in addition to the ongoing and significant work underway at the King City GO station to expand parking and enhance services. As a result of the leadership of MPP Lecce, all residents of King–Vaughan will soon enjoy two-way, all-day GO train service.
In 2025, the Government of Ontario under the leadership of Premier Doug Ford will allocate $400 million in OCIF funding to help 423 small, rural and northern communities build roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure. Communities may accumulate funding for up to five years to address larger infrastructure projects.
"As Mayor of King Township, I’d like to thank the Province of Ontario and MPP Stephen Lecce for providing more than $1 million in funding through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund," said Steve Pellegrini, Mayor of King Township. "This funding is crucial for maintaining and improving the infrastructure that our residents depend on every day. With this support, we can continue to invest in critical projects that ensure the long-term health and safety of our community."
The OCIF provides funding for local infrastructure projects in municipalities with populations under 100,000, rural and northern municipalities, as well as for Local Services Boards that own water or wastewater systems. Funding allocations are based on a formula that accounts for the different needs and economic conditions of each community.
"On behalf of the King Chamber of Commerce, we are delighted to see this crucial investment in our township's infrastructure. This investment through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund is a vital step in ensuring that King Township remains a dynamic and resilient community. It supports ongoing investment, talent attraction, and retention, helping businesses grow and succeed," said Michelle Frauley, President of the King Chamber of Commerce. "This fund ensures that our community remains connected, competitive, and positioned for long-term success. We thank MPP Stephen Lecce and the Government of Ontario for their continued dedication to supporting King Township and our chamber."
